The benefits of opting for a tankless water heating system in your home can be numerous according to Cathy Stegemoller, president and owner of Indianapolis-based Steg Plumbing.

“Tankless systems are becoming very popular – we probably put in five to 10 per week,” Stegemoller says. “Customers like them because they are 98 percent energy efficient, save space and are very quiet.”

Typically wall-mounted in garages, mechanical rooms or basements, tankless systems only heat water when it is needed and necessary. After a couple weeks, your system uses its smart technology to learn your household habits and heats the water before you are ready.

“Because they only make hot water when you need it, the homeowner saves energy,” Stegemoller says. “It’s usually more expensive to install than traditional tank heaters but well worth the extra upfront dollars for the long-term energy and space savings.”

Stegemoller adds that tankless systems, which typically require natural gas or propane gas, are relatively low-maintenance but should be flushed out once a year with a biodegradable descaler.

“You do need to have a water softener or some kind of de-scaler to keep it operating properly”, she says. “Central Indiana homes typically already have a water softener since we have such hard water.”

Steg Plumbing is a family-owned, full-service plumbing company that has operated in the greater Indianapolis area for more than 24 years. The Steg Team recommends tankless water heaters whenever possible. They carry a 15-year warranty on the heat exchanger and five-year warranty on parts.
