Garage door safety is something more people need to take seriously according to Joel Belyew, President of Precision Door Service of Indianapolis.
“There are 30,000 people a year treated in emergency rooms for garage door accidents,” Belyew said. “June is Garage Door Safety Month, and I hope more people think about safety before they try to fix or install a garage door themselves.”
As a homeowner, there are several things you can do to keep yourself and your family safe around garage doors.
The Door & Access Systems Manufacturers Association International (DASMA) recommends trained door systems technicians install garage doors. Old door springs should be replaced. They are arguably the most important and dangerous part of your door. Belyew noted that when springs wear out, they break and can cause serious injuries.
“When you are using the opener, keep the door in sight until it complete stops moving,” Belyew stated. “Teach children to never play under or near an open garage door.”
Another common cause of injuries is playing beat the door, after pressing your garage door opener then trying to run out under it. Both children and adults should avoid doing this Belyew said. “It’s dangerous and can result in serious injury or death. You should know how to use the emergency release in case someone is pinned by the door.”
The industry is also constantly working to improve standards and advance technology that helps protect consumers from injury.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has a Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act that requires all residential garage door openers meet the entrapment protection provisions for garage door openers. One of the provisions is that all garage door operators must re-open within 30 seconds of the start of movement in the downward direction if the mechanism senses that the door did not fully close.
