Home is more than just a “place to hang your hat.” For many of us, it is a dream fulfilled. That’s why it is so critical that we choose the right professionals for construction and home renovation projects. Quality and results matter – but so do integrity, transparency, and accountability. We have gathered five tips for hiring the right construction professionals for your next project.

  1. CHECK WITH HOME ARTISANS OF INDIANA. HAOI is a carefully curated group of artisans with proven track records of reliability, stellar customer service, quality, and value. They can direct you to the local artisan or craftsman who will best meet your needs – and exceed your expectations. There is a helpful database of recommended artisans available on their website at
  2. ASK PEOPLE IN YOUR SOCIAL NETWORK. “We absolutely recommend asking your family, friends or other trusted people for referrals,” said Dan Weingart, Home Artisans of Indiana member and Owner of GreenImage Landscaping, “Nearly all our clients are referred by word of mouth!”
  3. REVIEW WEBSITES. Do a Google search and then narrow down your list of potential contractors by evaluating their work, credentials, and experience and making sure they align with your vision. Do your due diligence by evaluating case studies and browsing project galleries.
  4. READ REVIEWS. What do past clients – your peers – have to say about their experiences? Are they happy with the results? Check out Google, Facebook, Yelp, and other online services to read reviews and ratings.
  5. HAVE A CONVERSATION WITH YOUR POTENTIAL CONTRACTOR! Schedule an appointment or a consultation and get to know them. This is your time, so feel free to ask whatever you need. “We always have a conversation prior to starting work. This gives the client an opportunity to learn about our services, our company, how we operate, and we provide a proper introduction to the technician and/or crew that will be working on their property. It also gives us an opportunity to learn about the client and set expectations from both sides,” said Weingart.
