Making a space your own is what every homeowner craves. One great way to do that is by installing custom cabinetry, which affords you the flexibility to make a plethora of selections. For starters, custom cabinets enable you to size everything precisely the way you want. For instance, say you have a window that’s offset; you can make it look like it was meant to be that way rather than sticking in a big filler piece.

“You can get a 34.5-inch cabinet so your faucet will line up with the center of the window rather than the basic 36 that will throw it out of kilter,” says Jeanne Holmes, lead CAD Designer at ACo.

Going the custom cabinetry route means you can create a kitchen that is as beautiful as it is functional and suits your particular wants and needs. That’s really the most important thing.

“Anyone can put together a pretty color palette, but it doesn’t work for the end user if it’s not going to be functional for what they personally need,” says Kayley Vargo, Design & Sales Consultant at ACo.

With regard to functionality, many homeowners like to incorporate organizational components into their homes to make a space less cluttered and more practical. For instance, they may build cabinets that incorporate roll-out drawers for silverware, trashcan pullouts, or space to hold small appliances. Holmes had a client who bakes cakes and wanted to store all her pans and mixers in a certain way. Vargo worked with a woman who asked her to design a custom sewing area that seamlessly blended into the space.

“It was a wall-to-wall project, and she wanted it to be more of a furniture piece console that sat at the end of the hallway,” says Vargo. “We made it so that half of it was storage and the other half was doors that could be open with room to slide in a chair to sit down and sew.”

One of the newer requests is from homeowners who are asking for cabinets or drawers that include electrical outlets for hair dryers, curling irons, and phone charging.

Another plus for installing custom cabinets is that it allows homeowners to color match to any color they want. Some custom lines will allow you to pick a specific manufacturer’s paint color; they can even match a tile or flooring sample.

“If you like the way a flooring looks and you want your cabinets to also look like that, we will custom match those colors,” says Holmes. “That’s true in both paint and stain so it really gives us the flexibility to create a unique oneof-a-kind kitchen for our clients.”

ACo works with craftsmen who create high-quality custom cabinets. These skilled craftsmen are knowledgeable about the different wood species, understanding what’s viable and what’s not. These skilled craftsmen are knowledgeable about the different wood species, understanding what’s viable and what’s not. Holmes recalls when a client had their eye on Pecky Cypress, a knotted wood where the knots are long and skinny. After doing some research and determining how the stain would take to this wood, however, it wasn’t a feasible choice to get the look the client ultimately wanted, so they went in another direction.

“If we can figure out how to build it, our artisans will work with us to get it done,” says Holmes.
