January is a Critical Accounting Period

When it comes to tackling undesirable tasks, many subscribe to the mantra, “Why do today what you can put off until tomorrow?” No doubt procrastination is alive and well. And while that may not always be a big deal, the philosophy is problematic when it comes to taxes. For starters, it’s not good if come January, you realize that your bookkeeping is a total mess.

“That’s a rude awakening when you’ve not properly managed the time to address those issues,” says Jon Markee, founder of Remote CPA.

The good news is that you can access automation tools like QuickBooks Online to help streamline the bookkeeping reconciliation process. By January 31, all 1099s and W2s must be issued. Missing the deadline results in penalties. By ensuring your records are accurate and complete, you’ll find that submitting those documents on time can be a breeze.

“The sooner you complete your bookkeeping, the smoother your financial operations will run,” says Markee.

A fresh start to the year is also the perfect time to outline your fixed expense budget for the next 12 months. This means getting down onto paper all of the expenses you’re sure won’t change for the next year. The sooner you populate that big picture, the easier it will be to predict financial hurdles for 2024.

“This crucial step can prevent cash flow surprises down the line and position you for profitable growth,” says Markee.

Though the process may sound overwhelming, using digital tools like BuilderTrend and Dext Prepare can save you time and limit human error. These digital accounting tools really do help you stay organized and on top of things when it comes to managing projects and capturing, uploading, and tracking your finances. Because again…procrastination is not ideal.

With the proper planning and forethought, the new year can be shiny and bright. Take the helm, set your financial foundation, and vow to make 2024 a solid and profitable year!
