Stone Mart’s Indianapolis location is celebrating its fifth-year anniversary on May 6th. If you haven’t visited its showroom, which features a striking waterfall island and an exquisite fireplace, or walked through the warehouse and stunning Galleria of Stone Jewels, this is a great time to do it!

Granite, quartzite, and quartz are beautiful and durable materials – perfect for everyday workspaces like kitchen countertops. Granite is a popular choice for flooring, while quartzite makes for a great waterfall island. Non-porous quartz shines in the bathroom and laundry room for countertops.

“I encourage people to think outside the box when it comes to materials,” says Kaelyn Van Camp, Marketing Manager for Stone Mart, a wholesale supplier of natural stone and engineered materials. “Besides countertops, think about accent tables, dining room tabletops, or coffee tables. Those are beautiful ways to incorporate one-of-a-kind pieces in your home.”

Marble and dolomite, a combination of quartzite and marble, are ornamental stones perfect for statement pieces. Both are heat resistant, making them good choices for elegant fireplaces.

Soapstone is dense and resistant to chemicals, making it excellent for laundry room countertops. While not scratch-resistant, mineral oil can help to hide scratches.

Porcelain is durable, heat- and scratch-resistant, and non-porous. These thinner, more lightweight sheets are ideal for fireplaces, backsplashes, and shower walls.

Porcelain, which is also resistant to frost, mildew, and UV rays, is a fantastic material for dressing up outdoor living spaces. Use it for outdoor kitchen countertops, flooring, or around the pool. A matte or honed finish weathers best.

Some darker shades of granite can safely be used outside, while lighter shades may contain minerals that can change color when exposed to UV rays. Any natural stone with a mesh backing or casing is not appropriate for outdoors.

“We always recommend checking with your fabricator on which materials will work best for your outdoor space,” says Van Camp.
